Tick vaccination
- At Central Apotheke Thalwil you can have your vaccinations carried out competently, quickly and inexpensively by appointment.
- Ticks can transmit TBE viruses, which can cause tick-borne encephalitis, which is not treatable.
- With the tick vaccination you protect yourself against the TBE viruses.
Who should be vaccinated and what is the benefit of vaccination?
The tick vaccination is especially recommended for people who like to spend time outdoors or in areas with lots of ticks. The tick vaccination protects against the TBE (tick-borne encephalitis) viruses and is now recommended for the whole of Switzerland by the Federal Office of Public Health because of the many tick-borne encephalitis cases in 2018 (see Tick-borne encephalitis: Extension of risk areas with vaccination recommendation). TBE viruses can cause meningitis, against which there are neither drugs nor a therapy.
Lyme disease
You cannot be vaccinated against the second pathogen in ticks, the Lyme disease bacteria. However, the disease (Lyme disease) is treatable with antibiotics.
Vaccination schedule: Get vaccinated 3 times for vaccine protection
The vaccination consists of a total of three vaccinations, with the first vaccination best given during the cold season. The first two vaccinations are given one month apart. The third vaccination follows five to twelve months after the second. After the second vaccination, a vaccination protection of 87% is achieved, after the third vaccination a vaccination protection of ≥ 95% is achieved and the protection lasts for ten years after the third vaccination.
The quick vaccination variant for the summer
In addition to the normal vaccination schedule, there is also the quick schedule at the beginning of the warm season. With this scheme, the second vaccination follows after only 14 days and the third vaccination after 5 to 12 months.

Does health insurance pay for tick vaccination at the pharmacy?
Currently, the costs for the vaccination are not officially covered by the compulsory health insurance. However, it has been our experience that the health insurance companies often pay the costs (minus deductible and excess) if the invoice is sent in. To be on the safe side, we recommend asking the respective health insurance company in advance.
